Continuing Resolution: A Modest Temporary Lifeline for Democracy

CHICAGO -- In a show of bipartisan cooperation, Congress has passed a Continuing Resolution (CR), averting a potential government shutdown and providing a lifeline for our nation's democracy.

“As Congress and the President work towards final appropriations, this Continuing Resolution provides much-needed stability for our local election officials as they tackle a range of challenges in preparing for the upcoming elections,” said Tiana Epps-Johnson, executive director of the Center for Tech and Civic Life. “Election officials rely on timely funding and stability to uphold the integrity of our electoral process.”

As the federal government grapples with the complexities of budgetary processes, it is essential to acknowledge the critical impact of this resolution on our local election officials who are diligently planning for the upcoming 2024 presidential primaries and general elections.

While a CR is a temporary measure, it offers crucial support for government operations and election planning. The Election Infrastructure Initiative urges Congress to continue working diligently to reach an agreement on final appropriations for FY24 and we call on Congress to allocate no less than $75 million for election infrastructure in any forthcoming bill. The Election Infrastructure Initiative is a project of the Center for Tech and Civic Life (CTCL) and Center for Secure and Modern Elections (CSME) that seeks $20 billion over 10 years for local and state election departments.

The Center for Tech and Civic Life is a nonpartisan nonprofit harnessing the promise of technology to modernize the American voting experience. We connect Americans with the information they need to become and remain civically engaged, and ensure that our elections are more professional, inclusive, and secure.

The Center for Secure and Modern Elections is dedicated to advancing pro-voter policies at the state level that modernize the voting process and ensure that every American, whether they are Republican, Democrat, or Independent, can have their voice heard.
