The “why” behind the “when” – vote tabulation and reporting methods across the country
Election day is in one week. Election officials across the country are preparing for the next phase of their work after all eligible votes have been cast – counting every vote, verifying results, and reporting total counts as quickly as possible within the scope of their budget, jurisdiction size, and state and local regulations.

Protecting Election Offices from Terrorist Threats
Safe and secure elections start with physical security. Ensuring our elections are safe and secure starts with protecting election offices from physical threats, such as the thwarted ISIS-linked plot targeting an Election Day attack in Oklahoma, announced in early October.
Election offices can take preparatory measures to enhance their protection, establish operational and infrastructure resilience, and rapidly respond to any attempts to cause physical harm to voters and election administrators. Examples are included below and at this fact sheet.

Running elections through natural disasters
With just 28 days until Election Day, election workers are in the final stretch of preparation. However, election officials in localities impacted by Hurricane Helene are facing overwhelming challenges. In Western North Carolina, flooding, power outages, and destroyed polling locations are forcing officials to scramble to ensure early voting begins on time, with only days left before the October 17 start. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has already announced a temporary increase in cost sharing in response to Hurricane Helene's impact in 5 states, including Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.
